This SEV was initiated following reports of coastal flooding due to exceptionally high tides occurring in Cork City and Galway county, indications of exceptionally high seas affecting European coasts, and level orange warnings issued by the Irish meteorological agency.

The system generating the surge had been dubbed "Storm Christine" by the 6th January.
