New UK flood defences announced

The UK governments today announced funding for 93 new flood defence schemes. These are designed to protect 164,000 homes, as well as key industrial areas, at a cost of £2.3 billion by 2015.

The schemes will comprise a mix of river and coastal flood defences. Key coastal defence schemes include coastal defences in Lancashire and Great Yarmouth, upgrading the tidal defences in the Thames estuary, and a new tidal barrier at Ipswich.

The announcement comes a week after the 60th Anniversary of the North Sea Floods.

More information can be found in the DEFRA press release. A full list of schemes can be found on the Environment Agency website.
