Tropical Cyclone Phailin

Tropical Cylone Phailin occurred in the Bay of Bengal in October 2013. It made landfall late on Saturday 12th October 2013, in the Indian states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.

Prior to landfall, a storm surge was predicted with a height of order 1m (see this GDACS alert). Surge heights of 3.5m were quoted in various media, apparently originating from the IMD, though this is TBC.

In the event, a surge of similar magnitude does seem to have occurred, though at time of writing this is TBC. More information will be made available shortly.

Satellite data are available through the eSurge database. These include SST, wind data from ASCAT and OSCAT (shown on right), and coastal altimetry from Cryosat.
