Successful launch of SARAL

Today, 23rd January, the Indian-French SARAL satellite (and six other payloads) were successfully launched into orbit aboard an Indian PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle). The launch took place from Satish Dawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, India at 12:31 UTC.

(ISRO logo)The SARAL spacecraft, deloped by ISRO, carries the AltiKa instrument, a wideband Ka-band altimeter developed by CNES. This instrument is designed for use by the oceanographic community, looking at the open ocean, coastal waters, inland waters and ice. As such, it is very much of interest to the storm surge community.

A video of the launch is available on the ISRO homepage, or below (via youtube).
